Treating for two. Oral health care and promotion in pregnancy

The impact of maternal oral health on overall maternal wellbeing in pregnancy, perinatal outcomes, and oral health in early childhood is an area of continued interest in international research. In contrast, there have been relatively few New Zealand publications investigating the oral health experiences of hapū māmā, or the experiences of New Zealand oral health providers and maternity carers in delivering oral health care and promotion to women during pregnancy.

The goal of this presentation is to provide an update on international best practise with respect to oral health care provision and promotion to women during pregnancy. Additionally, the findings of new research investigating New Zealand Lead Maternity Carers education needs to facilitate their provision of evidence-based oral health advice and promotion will be presented.

Biography

Growing up in Palmerston North, Ceridwen first became interested in dentistry through after-school, and holiday work assisting for a local dental practice. Ceridwen completed her undergraduate dental training at the University of Otago in 2013, and later returned to complete a Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry in Special Needs Dentistry in 2021.

Her area of doctoral research focussed on maternal oral health, and New Zealand maternity carers experiences of providing oral health education and promotion to women during pregnancy.

Ceridwen has spent the majority of her career working publicly in DHBs in the Greater Wellington Region, and currently splits her time between public and private practice.
