Sustainability in dental practice

We are currently going through a global humanitarian crisis, and no, we're not talking about COVID-19 but the Climate Crisis. With incredible amounts of greenhouse gas emissions being released every day since the industrial era, we are heading towards a world with greater threats to human health, through air pollution, damaged ecosystems, extreme heat, and unfavorable effects on our food and water.

But it's not all doom and gloom. There is plenty of research accompanied by current and upcoming national and global policies outlining that by reducing our emissions we can prevent drastic challenges to our planet and to human civilisation.

As health professionals, we must take responsibility and accountability to reduce emissions since we produce such a significant amount, but to also align with these governmental policies. This presentation will address my early expeditions in implementing sustainability into the hospital dental setting and outline the ways we can collaborate to challenge and change the way we practice.

Riku is currently a 2nd year house surgeon for CCDHB in Wellington. Loving the post student life and I have been thoroughly enjoying the work here in the public sector.

In my spare time, I'm an avid sports person (when I'm not injured!), video gamer, sub-par guitarist, and what's keeping me busy this year is further study for the Primaries. However, amidst all of this, I have a great passion and an advocate for environmental sustainability!

This has been an interest of mine since entering university and is a big influencer in a lot of what I do in life, similarly in the workplace where I have been injecting sustainable practice where possible. I've also been fortunate to be a part of the NZDA sustainability working group alongside some incredible and inspirational dentists to drive change in the way we practice dentistry.

I hope to further develop my knowledge and experience in this field to help collaborate with you all to make this world a better place!
