The exponential growth of the use of Social Media and the Internet creates wonderful opportunities but also give rise to some inevitable challenges. This is especially so in the context of the provision of healthcare by Medical practices. This session will:

  1. Illustrate the Power of Social media;
  2. Examine where personal conduct on social media can collide with professional obligations;
  3. Identify the employment/contractual and disciplinary consequences of this;
  4. Advise on how to deal with abuse or harassment on Social Media by Patients/members of the public;
  5. Practical guidance through these challenges and answers to your questions.

The session will endeavour to provide you with case study examples and advice on how to better equip yourself to deal with the challenges created by the Social Media environment we live with.


Sean is a Partner in the firm Wotton + Kearney. He has 30 plus years’ experience as a litigator specialising in Employment law and Medico-legal issues.

Acting for health professionals on a daily basis, Sean’s practice involves representing healthcare providers with HDC complaints, Medical Council Disciplinary processes and employment disputes. He has experience also with the Coronial processes and proceedings before the Human Rights Tribunal.

Sean is here today to deal with the implications of Social media to a dental practice and provide guidance on how to manage your exposure from both an employment law and Medico-legal perspective.

Sean is married with 6 children and in his spare time, when he gets it, tries to improve his golf game.
