Amanda is a Perth Oral medicine specialist, Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Australia, and Consultant at Perth Children’s Hospital. Her professional roles include chair of the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia Education and Scientific subcommittee, on the Board of Studies for Oral Medicine at the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and on the Expert Advisory panel for Head and Neck Cancer Australia. She is also an Examiner of Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS) and secretary of the WA Regional Committee. She is President of Women in Dentistry WA, Treasurer of the International Association for Dental Research (Perth region), and on the Board of Directors of the Jaye Radisich Foundation and Uniting Smiles Charity. She was previously chair of the Australasian Sleep Association Dental Sleep Medicine Council and was on the Executive committee of the Australian Dental Association Western Australia.

Amanda continues to engage in research, publishing in and reviewing for several journals. She has contributed to several textbook chapters in Oral Medicine, and regularly lectures nationally and internationally, including at a TEDx UWA. Amanda has received multiple awards and commendations for her work. Her interests include adult and paediatric oral mucosal disease, orofacial pain conditions, temporomandibular disorders and dental sleep medicine.

The Snoring Adult Patient: Discussing Dental Sleep Medicine

The range of differential diagnoses for a patient presenting with oral mucosal soreness is broad, and it can be difficult to know where to start when a patient presents with this complaint. Over the years, Dr Amanda Phoon Nguyen has established an active online presence both with her personal and business pages. Amanda has successfully grown a following of over 12,000 followers across her dental social media pages, garnered 119k total views on YouTube, and manages the social media pages for multiple organisations such as the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia.

In this lecture, she will share her experience in the area, and help attendees develop a sustainable social media plan that will take some of the burden out of using social media for work, to create a fun way to interact with more people online. She will share some simple social-media tips to grow a dental practice’s presence and how it’s use can help with branding and create opportunities. This lecture is suitable for dental practitioners and dental teams.

What We See and What We Don’t: Oral Ulceration

Oral ulcers can be a conundrum with a dizzyingly long list of differential diagnoses, from the very common conditions to the rarer malignancies. Often, what we see is only the beginning in the process of recognizing, diagnosing and managing oral ulcers. Considering the aetiology assists in understanding them. Dr Amanda Phoon Nguyen will share her approach to oral ulceration with clinical tips and red flags not to miss.

Dental Sleep Medicine Masterclass

Attendees of the Dental Sleep Masterclass are encouraged to have attended The Snoring Adult Patient, where screening, the pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnoea and the types of oral appliances for dental sleep medicine are discussed.

The masterclass will provide attendees with practical tips via case discussions in dental sleep medicine and aims to lead dental practitioners through an initial patient appointment and work up for a mandibular advancement device, with hands on Som Gauge/ George Gauge experience for protrusive registration, through to the insert appointment and subsequent reviews.
