Tino is a clinician, academic, mentor, and clinical researcher. For his contributions to clinical periodontal research and dedication to teaching, he was awarded the 2021 Australian Dental Association Service Medallion Award. Tino is also the President of the Australia and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists (ANZAP) for the term 2024-2026. He is a Periodontist with private practices in Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains, operating the Specialist Periodontal and Implant Centre.
Tino holds the position of Associate Professor at the University of Otago, the University of Sydney, and the University of Queensland. His previous publications focus on periodontal prognostication, and his landmark studies correlating periodontitis with rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes mellitus have been cited over 1,700 times. His Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) topic and recent publications in high-impact peer-reviewed journals address the predictable management of peri-implantitis and the management of periodontal recession on teeth and implants using autologous and alternative tissues.
He is also a Periodontal Examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS) and serves as the Director of the University of Otago International Team of Implantology (ITI) Study Club. Tino is a two-time recipient of the prestigious National Health and Medical Research Council Scholarship, first awarded in 1998 for his Master of Dental Science (MDSc) and again in 2011 for his PhD.
His research on the role of enamel matrix derivative in the long-term stability of connective tissue grafts for advanced gingival recession won Best Clinical Research at the 2018 Biannual Meeting of the Australian Society of Periodontology. His most recent clinical research on maxillary anterior ridge preservation received the award for Best Clinical Research at the 2020 Virtual Osteology World Symposium.
