Dental radiology - whether it is an intraoral image, an OPG, a lateral cephalogram or a CBCT scan or a combination of the above -forms an integral part of diagnosis.
In this one day workshop, the focus will be purely on diagnosis. I would not be focusing of technical aspects of radiology, for example, the integration of CBCT scans with intraoral scanning, how an OPG or Cone Beam CT machine works, the strengths and weaknesses of different brands of machines, radiation dosage, artificial intelligence and dental diagnosis, 3-D treatment planning… I will touch on these topics briefly if appropriate, but there are others who can cover these topics far better than I can!
My skills are in the practical elements of day-to-day dental diagnostics. My interest in this area have been honed over many years as a specialist periodontist in my busy referral based practice, then enhanced by completion of the specialist training in Dentomaxillofacial radiology at the University of Queensland in 2013-2015. I have spent the past 10 years working full-time in my own teleradiology practice (Teledent) providing comprehensive dental radiology reporting services to dental practitioners.
This workshop will be based on the cases that I am asked to interrogate and report on daily. The cases will illustrate normal variations of anatomy that can mimic pathology (“Does this look normal to you?” is a question I am frequently presented with); subtle and not so subtle signs of pathology and where radiology is inconclusive and further tests, including biopsy, are indicated.
You are invited to participate in the workshop by contributing your comments to the cases as they are presented.

This interactive hands-on workshop will provide participants with a practical and evidence-based approach to posterior tooth preparation and adhesive bonding techniques. The focus will be on understanding the fundamental differences between onlay and full crown preparations, particularly in occlusal reduction design and plane orientation for both maxillary and mandibular molars.
In addition to preparation techniques, participants will gain hands-on experience with bonding ceramic onlays and full-coverage crowns, learning best practices for adhesive protocols. The course will also include a dedicated session on Deep Margin Elevation (DME), a critical technique for managing subgingival margins to facilitate adhesive restorations while preserving tooth structure.
Key Learning Objectives:
Who Should Attend:
This course is designed for dentists looking to refine their posterior adhesive restoration techniques, with a focus on achieving strong, aesthetic, and biologically sound results. Whether you are new to ceramic onlays and crowns or looking to enhance your existing techniques, this hands-on session will provide valuable practical experience to implement immediately in clinical practice.

Tooth extraction initiates a series of biological events that ultimately lead to changes in the dimensions of the hard and soft tissues that comprise the alveolar ridge. These changes can result in compromised aesthetic outcomes and present surgical challenges. It is crucial for clinicians to first carefully assess the teeth indicated for extraction to ensure that the subsequent rehabilitation of these teeth—whether through fixed options like implants or crowns and bridges, or removable options such as partial dentures—can be executed more predictably. This course will cover the biological, technical, and surgical factors that can influence the healing of extraction wounds in both anterior and posterior areas of the dentition. Additionally, it will provide a step-by-step protocol for Ridge Preservation Procedures based on the types of ridge defects that clinicians may encounter prior to tooth extraction.

Lecture 1
Getting to the root of the problem – Understanding and diagnosing endodontic pain
This lecture explores the complexities of diagnosing and managing endodontic pain, providing clinicians with the tools to identify the causes of discomfort. Key topics include distinguishing between pulpal and periapical pain, understanding the physiological mechanisms behind pain, and using advanced diagnostic techniques for accurate assessment. Attendees will also gain confidence for incorporating a systematic approach within their practice to diagnose pain, assist clinical decision-making and evaluate patient outcomes.
Lecture 2
Cracks in endodontic treatment – Diagnosis, management, and prognosis
Cracked teeth present a significant diagnostic challenge for clinicians and an ongoing source of pain and frustration for patients. From the lens of an endodontist, this lecture will assist with clinical decision-making by drawing on international position statements and cover the classification of cracked teeth, from craze lines to vertical root fractures. Attendees will be guided through effective management strategies for cracked teeth to more confidently approach these cases, including when to treat endodontically or extract, and how to improve long-term prognosis. Emphasis will be placed on personalised care, and evidence-based approaches to enhance successful outcomes for patients.
Lecture 3
Mastering cleaning and shaping in endodontics
This lecture is designed to help clinicians refine their endodontic skills and stay up-to-date with the latest techniques in chemo-mechanical debridement and shaping of root canals. It will delve into the importance of optimal coronal and radicular access and preservation of dentine. Participants will learn about the latest advancements in instrumentation and protocols needed provide thorough cleaning, effective disinfection, and shaping of the canal system. The lecture will also address common challenges such as complex canal anatomy, ledging, and transportation, offering practical tips for overcoming these obstacles. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of the science and art of root canal treatment, equipping them with greater knowledge and confidence to perform successful procedures and improve patient satisfaction.
Hands-on workshop
Shaping for success using Protaper Ultimate (Dentsply Sirona)
This hands-on workshop will provide attendees with in-depth training on the ProTaper Ultimate system by Dentsply Sirona. This system offers the latest advancements in rotary endodontic instrumentation that can be used safely and effectively by general dentists on a wide range of cases. Participants will gain practical experience using the system to navigate complex canal anatomies, reduce the risk of file breakage, and achieve optimal canal preparation.
