The following sessions are taking place on Saturday 23 August at Tākina Wellington Convention & Exhibition Centre for the Final Year Dental Students to attend
09:00am | Shadows on the Surgery Wall: Business Ethics in Dentistry Raj Rattan’s presentation explores the business of dentistry from an ethical perspective. He begins by asking a fundamental question – what is the patient buying? Dentists operate at the junction of healthcare and business, where decisions impact not only patient wellbeing but also impact business profitability. Ethical practice demands a balance between clinical integrity, legal obligations, and commercial viability. Commercial pressures, such as targets and/or incentives, can also create conflicts of interest. Raj explores what is meant by information asymmetry and the principal agent problem and considers the ethical pitfalls such as the risk of overtreatment, up-selling, and misleading marketing. He challenges the conventional approach to ethical practice and offers an ancient, alternative approach which safeguards reputations and ensures long-term success.
